On November 6, 2019, Southwestern Law School’s Entertainment and Intellectual Property Law Alumni Association (SWEIP) is hosting its 4th Biennial Donald E. Biederman Entertainment & Media Law Institute Gala. This special event provides SWEIP and other members of the Southwestern community with the opportunity to recognize alumni and friends for their outstanding service to the entertainment and media industries, the legal profession, and legal education.

This year, SWEIP will honor Neville Johnson as the Outstanding Alumnus in Entertainment and Media Law; The Hollywood Foreign Press as a Friend of Entertainment and Media Law; and Professor Robert C. Lind will receive the Donald E. Biederman Legacy Award. Proceeds from the event will go to the Entertainment and The Arts Legal Clinic at Southwestern.

Under the auspices of the Biederman Entertainment and Media Law Institute, Southwestern offers the broadest and most in-depth entertainment, media, and intellectual property curriculum of any U.S. law school. The Institute's full-time professors, who have produced many of the leading treatises and casebooks in these fields, are joined by a roster of adjunct faculty that reads like a “Who’s Who” of the entertainment and media law bar. A prestigious executive board and extensive network of alumni, who occupy important corporate and law firm positions throughout the industry, are also very involved in Institute activities and serve as mentors to Southwestern’s students.

The Institute offers more than 60 courses, and oversees a comprehensive externship program, an entertainment law firm practicum, the Entertainment and The Arts Legal Clinic, specialized summer programs in Los Angeles and London, and the Biederman Scholars mentoring program. The nation’s first LL.M. in entertainment and media law was established at Southwestern. The Institute sponsors prominent speakers and major conferences with several bar associations, local and national copyright societies and other organizations, and publishes the Journal of  International Media and Entertainment Law in association with the ABA Forums on Communications Law and the Entertainment and Sports Industries, as well as an award-winning entertainment law blog, www.biedermanblog.com

SWEIP was launched in 2011 to bring together all Southwestern alumni who are currently working in the fields of entertainment and/or IP transaction law or litigation; those who work for an entertainment company or entertainer; and/or those who work as a creative person in the entertainment industry. SWEIP was established to build an active alumni community to cultivate relationships and create valuable resources and activities. In addition to supporting programs and events focused on entertainment and intellectual property issues, SWEIP serves as a liaison between Southwestern alumni and the current Southwestern student body.

The groundbreaking Entertainment and The Arts Legal Clinic enables Southwestern students to provide business and legal affairs services for low budget, independent films and an array of other creative endeavors, under the supervision of Professors Jay Gendron and Orly Ravid, for clients who would otherwise be financially unable to secure the assistance of a lawyer. This program supplements Southwestern’s outstanding entertainment/media law externship and law firm and in-house practicum programs by creating opportunities for students to obtain hands-on training with real clients.
